Biography
From the cantonists . In his hometown he studied at a Jesuit college. Later, he studied law at the University of Toulouse , then devoted himself to the study of church history, patristics and medieval law.
In 1656, he became secretary of Pierre de Marc , archbishop of Toulouse , a historian who appreciated his abilities and left all his papers to him after de Marc’s death. Baluze released the first full edition of Pierre de Marc 's treatise De libertatibus Ecclesiae Gallicanae (1663) and published his Marca hispanica (1688).
Thanks to the patronage of the Archbishop of Toulouse, in 1667 he took the place of a librarian at the actual head of government of Louis XIV, Jean-Baptiste Colbert , where he worked for 33 years. Thanks to this, he was able to compile, compile and publish many different sources from the history of France.
In 1668 he became professor of canon law at the Royal College ; in 1707-1710 he was its director.
In 1710, having published the genealogical history of the House of Auvergne, E. Baluz came into conflict with Cardinal Emmanuel de Bouillon , who proved that the origin of the Dauphin of Auvergne goes in a straight line from the ancient hereditary counts of Auvergne of the 9th century.
As a result, a war of brochures began and E. Balouz received Lettre de cachet , was stripped of his posts and money and was expelled from Paris , but in 1713 he was returned again, although he was not returned the posts.
He died on July 20, 1718.
Scientific activity
E. Baluz received great fame thanks to his criticism of documents relating to church history and to canon law. He published 45 works and prepared for the new critical edition of 116 works of the past, the most important of which are: “Capitularia regum Francorum” (2 volumes, Paris, 1677; 2 volumes, Venice, 1772; 2 volumes, Paris, 1779 ) and Miscellanea (7 vols., Paris, 1678-1716; new edition of Manzi, 4 vols., Lucca, 1761).
In addition: “Conciliorum nova collectio” (Paris, 1685), supplement to the collection of Lubbes; "Historia paparum Avenionensium" (2 vol., Paris, 1693); Epistolae Innocentii papae III (2 vols., Paris, 1652) and Cyprian's Opera (Paris, 1726), Historia Tutelensis (1717).
Memory
- In October 2006, a bust of E. Baluz was installed in his hometown of Tulle.
- In 2007, established the historical prize. Etienne Baluza.
