Adrianchia

Adrianichtia [1] ( lat. Adrianichthyidae ) is a family of ray-finned fish from the order sarganoid . These are small fish that are found in fresh and brackish waters from India to Japan and the Malay Archipelago, primarily in Sulawesi [2] . In the family of about 37 species in two genera (some distinguish the third - Xenopoecilus ). Some species are rare and endangered, and 2-4 of them may have already disappeared [2] [3] .

Content

Appearance and build

Most species of this family are rather small, which makes them suitable for aquariums. Adrianichthys reach lengths of 8.5–17.1 cm, depending on the species [4] , the largest representatives of Oriasia ( Oryzias ) reach lengths of up to 8 cm. Most species of Oriasia are half as long, and the smallest are 1.6 cm long [5] . They have a number of features, including the unusual structure of the jaw and the presence of additional bone in the tail [6] .

A genetic study of the family suggests that it originated in Sulawesi and spread from there to the mainland of Asia; the putative genus Xenopoecilus does not appear to be associated with morphologically distinct Oryzias species [7] .

Aquarium Content

It is believed that adrianichtiyevy bred as aquarium fish from the 17th century. Japanese Oryazia became one of the first species that were bred in aquariums. Its golden form was artificially bred [8] .

Reproduction

Like most fishes, adrianichthiae usually spawn eggs, which are fertilized in water. However, some species, including Japanese Orizia, have internal fertilization and spawn out just before the hatching of the fry. Several other species carry eggs attached to the body between the ventral fins [6] .
