Herzen Street (Minsk)

Herzen Street ( Belor. Vulitsa Herzen ) is a street in the historical center of Minsk, in the Upper Town . Passes from the pedestrian zone in the area of ​​Freedom Square to Zybitskaya Street .

History

Street tracing was formed in the 16th century. At the end of the XVI - beginning of the XVII century, it began from the New Market Square (now Freedom Square), crossed Zybitskaya Street and led to the Lavsky Bridge over the Svisloch [1] .

The street until 1866 was called Malaya Bernardinskaya, along the Bernardine monastery, along which it passed. In 1866 it was renamed the Little Monastery. After the October Revolution received the name of A. I. Herzen [2] .

In the XVIІ-XVIII years. the street was paved with paving stones, and this paving remained until the middle of the 20th century. On the odd side of the street there was a stone wall of the Bernardine monastery, and at the beginning of the street there were adjacent shopping arcades. The first information about the stone houses on the even side of the street dates back to the 18th century. Modern buildings have been preserved since the 19th century [1] .

Description

The street starts from the pedestrian part of Freedom Square, at the city hall, at its beginning is adjacent Cyril and Methodius Street . She goes east, then turning north. Engels Street adjoins in the south, and Muzykalny Lane in the east. House numbering is from Freedom Square.
