Career
Billy Costello made his debut in the professional ring on August 22, 1979, defeating American athlete Angel Ortiz (3-4-1) by unanimous decision.
After 26 professional fights in which he won (16 times ahead of schedule) he reached his first title match. On January 29, 1984, he entered the ring against Texas boxer Bruce Curry (33-7), the world title in the WBC welterweight champion was at stake in the fight. On July 15 of the same year, he successfully defended the title against Ronnie Shields (20-2), and on November 3 held his second defense in a duel with Saul Mambi (35-15-5). February 16, 1985 held the third fight-defense of his title Leroy Haley (49-4-2). August 21, 1985 suffered the first defeat in his professional career from Lonnie Smith (20-1-1) and lost his league title.
On February 9, 1986, he suffered a second career defeat from Nicaraguan Alexis Arguello (75-7). June 18, 1999 held a duel against the former world lightweight champion according to WBC Juan Laporte . The fight ended in a victory for Costello by a separate referee's decision, and after him both boxers completed their professional careers.
During his professional career, Castello held 42 matches, won 40 (23 times ahead of schedule) and lost twice ahead of schedule.
