Life
Elizabeth was the eldest child of Jean II , Count d'Etamp, Nevers, Rethel and d'Ey and his first wife Jacqueline d'Ailly. Since Elizabeth's younger brother died in childhood, and his father had no more sons, he appointed his eldest daughter as the successor of the counties of Nevers and d'E.
On April 22, 1456 [2] in Bruges, she married her second cousin, Duke Johann of Cleves . After the marriage of Mary of Burgundy with Adolf I of Cleves , this was the second marriage between the Burgundian house and the house of Lamarck. These marriages turned the Duchy of Cleves into a kind of supplement to Burgundy for the next hundred years, which was mainly reflected in cultural life. The court and administration of Kleve began to imitate Burgundy in everything.
After the death of Adolf Egmont , the duke of Geldern, the sister of Adolf Ekaterina and the emperor Maximilian I claimed the duchy of Geldern. The emperor's claim was based on his marriage to Mary of Burgundy. When Johann I went to Geldern to support the emperor, Elizabeth headed the government at Cleves during his absence [3] .
Elizabeth died June 21, 1483 before her father. Her rights to the Nevers and d'E counties were inherited by her third son Engelbert , who founded the Cleves-Nevers dynasty. She was buried in St. Mary’s Cathedral Church in Kleve. The grave is covered with engraved and gilded copper plates. The top plate, commissioned by Carl Egmont , depicts the late spouses, and this is one of the few images of Elizabeth. The tomb is considered one of the most important artifacts of its kind [4] .
