Biography
Born in Lower Austria. In 1892, he moved to the Kingdom of Romania with his mother and brother.
He studied with the brothers of Christian schools in Bucharest , in 1906 entered the Roman Catholic seminary, and later continued his studies in Rome at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas and the Pontifical Urban University . He became a doctor of philosophy, theology (1910) and canon law (1911).
September 4, 1910 was ordained.
From 1924 to 1948 - rector of the Bucharest Theological Seminary. He lectured on canon law . He later became bishop of the Iasi diocese .
After the communists arrived in Romania, being an opponent of the regime, was subjected to repression. In June 1949, he was arrested by members of the Securitate . September 10, 1951 transferred to Sighet prison. Stripped naked in a cold, unheated cell, deprived of food and water three months later, he died and was buried in an unknown grave. After his death, the communist authorities destroyed all documents relating to the conclusion of the bishop.
On January 28, 1997, the process of beatification began. On October 31, 2013, Pope Francis issued a decree on his martyrdom and declared May 17, 2014 the day of his beatification, Anton Durkovich.
