Clan nicholson

Clan Nicolson (Scott. - Clan Nicolson) - one of the lowland clans of Scotland . According to historical legends and documents of the clan, the Nicholson clan originates from a lawyer who lived in the city of Edinburgh in the 16th century . This lawyer was from a family of merchants living in the city of Aberdeen . In the 1980s, the heralds of Scotland recognized the 4th Baron Karnok as the leader of the Nicholson clan. At the same time, another person who came from the island of Skye . demanded that he be recognized as the leader of the Nicholson clan, because a clan named Nicholson also lived on the Isle of Skye. The heralds of Scotland suggested that this person change the surname (and name of the clan) to McNickeyl or McNecail (Gaelic - MacNeacail). As a result of these disputes, today in Scotland there are two clans that claim the name and titles of the Nicholson clan - mountain and plain. But the mountain clan is called McNickail.

Nicholson Clan History

Clan Name Origin

Clan Name Nicholson is the English version of the clan name. Means "son of Nicola." The name Nicholas is a variant of the name Nicholas and comes from the Greek Νικόλαος - Nikolaos - "the winner of the people." This name first appears on the British Isles during the Norman Conquest - it was very common during the Middle Ages in Europe. It is believed that the name of the clan from the Isle of Skye - McNickail also comes from the name of St. Nicholas, but this is not English, but the Celtic (Gaelic) version of the name.

Clan Origin

Both clans - mountain and lowland - McNickeyl and Nicholson have the same heraldry. The coat of arms of the leaders of the clans is a golden shield with the heads of birds of prey: hawks for McNickail and falcons for Nicholson [2] . But there is little genealogical evidence of the common origin of these two clans, therefore they are considered different clans. There is a version that the Nicholsons are of Scandinavian origin, and the name of the clan comes from the Scandinavian name Olsen [2] . In addition, in the Gaelic language, the word "nick" (Nic), which means "daughter." In addition, in England, in the areas that were once under the rule of the Vikings (in particular, in Yorkshire and Tyneside ), the surname Nicholson is also common [2] . Some descendants of the Scandinavians came to Scotland during the Norman conquest of England and settled in Scotland during the reign of the King of Scotland, David I [2] .

Scottish-Norwegian Wars

In the Middle Ages, a number of islands and territories in Scotland were captured by the Vikings . The kings of Scotland, who gradually strengthened their power, could not accept this. In the XII - XIII centuries , the Scots waged a war with the Vikings, which ended with the victory of the king of Scotland. During one of these wars , the Norwegian king Haakon IV in 1263 sent an advance detachment under the command of Andres Nikolassen, who was the king's milk brother and one of the kingdom's main barons . This detachment robbed Butte Island before the arrival of the main Norwegian fleet [2] . After the main forces of the Norwegian fleet arrived, the Scots attacked him, and the battle of Largs occurred - the Norwegians were defeated [2] . There is a legend that after that Anders Nikolassen was an ambassador to Scotland and had the task of concluding peace with Scotland - a treaty concluded in the city of Perth . According to this treaty, the islands around Scotland came under the authority of the king of Scotland [2] .

XVI — XVII centuries

Clan Nicholson claims that the clan comes from James Nicholson, a lawyer from Edinburgh who died in 1580. [2] Its ancestors were residents of the city of Aberdeen - they are known from messages of the XV century . James Nicholson had two sons - John and James [2] . James Nicholson became a church leader and head of the Church Assembly of Scotland in 1595 [2] . In 1606, he became bishop of Dunkeld. He died in 1607 . John Nicholson (d. 1605 ), the elder brother of James, acquired the Lasswaed lands between Sinclair and Dryden in 1592 [2] . In 1629, his son, Sir John Nicholson of Lasswade (d. 1651), became a baronet of Nova Scotia. The latter’s grandson, Sir John Nicholson of Lasswade, 2nd Baronet (d. 1680), was a member of the Scottish Parliament from Edinburgh in 1672 - 1674 [2] .

ХІХ - ХХ centuries

The last direct descendant of the chiefs of the Nicholson clan died in 1826 [2] . The title passed to another line, which was close to the bishops of Dunkeld . The title of Baron Karnock was inherited by Major General Sir William Nicholson, the 9th Baronet (1758-1820), who was the only son of George Nicholson of Tarviston (d. 1769) and grandson of Lieutenant Colonel William Nicholson (d. 1720). He has been to America, India, Ireland, on the island of Mauritius . He died in 1820 . He was succeeded by his son - Admiral , Sir Frederick Nicholson, 10th Baronet (1815-1899). In 1879, the admiral's eldest son, Lieutenant Frederick Nicholson (1848–1879), was killed in South Africa during the Zulus war [2] . The title was inherited by his second son - Arthur Nicholson (1849-1928). In June 1916, Arthur Nicholson received the title of 1st Baron Karnok [3] . In 1980, David Nicholson, 4th Baron Karnock (1920-2008), was recognized as the leader of the Nicholson clan. The reason for this was that he was a direct descendant of John Nicholson, 1st Baron Lassouad (died in 1651 ). Today, the position of leader of the Nicholson clan is vacant, although the 5th Baron Karnok - Adam Nicholson has all legal rights to this post.
