Kaplinsky, Yaan

The son of a Polish Jew and Estonian . Father, philologist Jerzy Kaplinsky (1903-1943), was arrested in the first year after Estonia joined the USSR in 1940 and died in custody. Mother, Nora Kaplinski , was a translator of French literature. Jaan grew up in Tartu and spent summer time with relatives in the vicinity of Võru . He studied at the University of Tartu , a diploma in romance philology ( 1966 ). He was formed in the circle of Tartu semiotics ( Yu. M. Lotman and others), at the same time he was deeply influenced by Eastern philosophy, primarily Buddhism , one of the mentors in which was an outstanding theologian , philosopher , philologist and poet Uku Masing ( 1909 - 1985 ).

The initiator and one of the authors of the Letter of the Forty (1980) is the appeal of forty Estonian intellectuals against the policy of Russification in the Estonian SSR.

Translated from Chinese (“ Tao Te Ching ”) and European languages ​​- English, French, Spanish, Swedish (verses by T. Transtremer ). His own poems and essays are translated into English, French, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Icelandic, Hebrew, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Czech, Bulgarian, Japanese and other languages. Winner of the Wilenica Prize ( 2001 ), Max Jacob Prize ( 2003 ). To 4 poems Kaplinsky wrote the music of H. Burtwistle ( 1998 ). In 2014, Kaplinsky released the first collection of poems written in Russian ^[3] , receiving a Russian prize for this book; In 2017, the second book in Russian, Wegener's Smile, was published. In 2018, he was awarded the Andrei Bely Prize in the nomination "For Merits to Russian Literature".

From 1990 to 1992 he participated in the work of the Congress of Estonia .

In 1992 - 1995 - Member of the Estonian Parliament . Since 2004 - Member of the Estonian Social Democratic Party.
