General Information
Michaela is the only child in the family of Mihai and Marcela Buzarnescu. Her father, in his youth, played tennis for the national team of his university and introduced his daughter to this game at the age of four, since then remaining her coach. Mother is a pharmacist by profession [4] .
His favorite cover is hard, the best hit is forehand, in the tennis world he admires the game of Monica Seles and Roger Federer .
Sports career
Michaela’s junior career was successful, she was in the top five in the ITF ranking among girls [2] . At the end of 2005, she became the finalist of the prestigious Orange Bowl junior tournament in singles, and the next year she won the US Open Doubles Championship with Raluka Olaru [5] . Already in 2004, the young Romanian started participating in professional tournaments, having won two ITF tournaments in singles and doubles for a season, and in April 2006 she entered the court as a member of the Romanian team in the match of the Federation Cup with the Swedes . However, at 18, Buzarnescu suffered a shoulder injury and missed half the season, losing sponsors [2] .
Returning to the court, Buzarnescu continued to play mainly in ITF tournaments, winning several competitions of this class in a year [4] . In 2011-2012, she was in the second hundred of the WTA rating and was again included in the Romanian national team, however, a new injury forced her to miss the entire 2013 season. Buzarnescu underwent two knee operations; after the first of them, not knowing whether she would be able to return to the court, the Romanian entered the university, where she began to study sports medicine . The last year of study coincided with the resumption of participation in the professional tour, but Buzarnescu managed to finish it and get a diploma of higher education [2] .
In June 2017, a new coach began working with Buzarnescu, who managed to instill new confidence in her [2] . During this season, she won seven singles titles and three doubles in ITF tournaments, and for the first time in her career at the US Open she made her way into the main bracket of the adult Grand Slam tournament [4] . After that, the Romanian also visited the semi-finals of the WTA tournament in Linz and finished the year in the first hundred of the rating. The next season, she continued to develop her late success, moving up from 142nd place in mid-2017 to 21st year later [6] . In 2018, Buzarnescu played in the seven finals of the WTA tournaments and won two of them - one in the doubles and singles. In January, in Hobart, she lost in the final to Elise Mertens , in May at the tournament in the Czech Republic at the same stage she lost to the court mistress Petra Kvitova , while winning the first set. In July, at a premiere tournament in San Jose (USA), Michael in two sets defeated Maria Sakkari from Greece. She also made it to the 4th round at the French Open in singles (after defeating Elina Svitolina [7] over the 4th racket of the world) and to the quarterfinals in this tournament and at the Wimbledon in doubles. In the doubles ranking, she rose to 24th place, and in singles in August she entered the Top-20, finishing the season also in 24th position, despite the US Open [8] missed due to another injury (this time, ankles) [8 ] .
From the day of the injury in Montreal in August 2018 to the last decade of February 2019, Buzarnescu failed to win a single match, and a series of defeats stretched for 11 games. Only on February 27 at the tournament in Acapulco (Mexico) she in the first round defeated Australian Daria Gavrilova in two sets, who also did not win a single victory from the beginning of the season [9] .
