- NASA Interplanetary Probe New Horizons successfully flew past the 2014 Kuiper Belt object MU69 (Ultima Thule) [1] .
- In Orsk (Orenburg Region), 7 people were killed in a fire in a residential building, including children [2] .
- January 2
- In Denmark, during a storm, a passenger train crashed on the Great Belt Suspension Bridge connecting Funen and Zealand. Killed 8 people [3] .
- In the Gulf of Guinea, in the territorial waters of Benin , 20 miles from the port of Cotonou, pirates seized the container ship Mandy (MSC Mandy, flying the Panama flag) for several hours. Having robbed the crew of the ship and taking 6 Russian citizens hostage, including the captain of the ship, the pirates disappeared [4 ] .

- In the capital of Chechnya , Grozny , the sale of tickets for the film "Love youself" by the Korean pop group BTS has been suspended. The reason was the threats against the organizers from persons who considered the screening of the film to be “an insult to the Chechen people” [9] .

- The Chinese lunar rover Yutu-2 ( Chang'e-4 mission) woke up from sleep mode and began investigating the surface of the far side of the moon [20] .
- The Electoral Commission of the Democratic Republic of the Congo announced the winner of the presidential election - it was the leader of the opposition and the leader of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress Party, Felix Chisecedi [21] .
- January 11th
- The Parliament of Macedonia approved a law amending the country's constitution to rename it to Northern Macedonia [22] .
- January 12th
- 20 people were injured in an explosion in Paris. The condition of seven people is grave, among the victims there are three firefighters. [23]

- January 18th
- Two Su-34 fighters collided and fell into the Tatar Strait during a planned training flight over the Sea of Japan. One of 4 pilots survived [33] .
- The explosion at the oil pipeline of the state - owned company Pemex in the state of Hidalgo (Mexico) killed 76 people [34] .
- The Grozny Zavodsky District Court upheld the lawsuit of the Chechen prosecutor's office against Gazprom Mezhregiongaz Grozny LLC and decided to write off debts from the population for gas worth 9 billion rubles [35] .
- January 19
- In the Bashkir city of Sibai , the free distribution of protective masks and activated carbon began to combat smog that enveloped the city and air pollution, due to which the smell of sulfur is felt in the air. - January 22
- Tu-22M3 bomber crashed while landing in the Murmansk region . As a result of the disaster killed three crew members of four. The cause of the accident was a pilot error in worsened weather conditions. [43]

- January 23
- The speaker of the Venezuelan parliament, Juan Guaido , during the thousands of demonstrations in Caracas declared himself acting president of the country, which received support from the United States and several other countries. The current president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Washington [45] .
- The Sejm of Latvia with 69 votes in favor with 31 votes in favor approved the government led by Krishjanis Karins from the Unity party, which took 5th place, ending the almost three-month period of negotiations on the formation of the cabinet, which began after the parliamentary elections in October 2018 [ 46] .
- January 24th
