“Used to Love You” is an emotional ballad for a midtempo synthesizer, with instruments composed of pianos, restrained synthesizers and drums. Lyrically, the song speaks of a painful break, with the main character asking why she fell in love. Gwen Stefani described the song as being inspired by the end of her 13-year marriage with Bush's vocalist, Gavin Rossdale.

“Used to Love You” was praised, with many critics noting Stephanie’s lyrical content and emotional delivery. Others rated it as a heartbreaking song. Critics regarded the single as an improvement over its 2014 releases, which Stephanie herself later described as “urgently shipped.” Stephanie first introduced the song during a concert on October 17, 2015 , and her music video was released three days later. The music video is a single shot of Stephanie on a black background, showing her emotions and sometimes pronouncing some words from the song. The song received its first television appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on October 26, 2015 .

Release Description

In October 2014, Gwen Stefani released her first solo single, “ Baby Don't Lie, ” and after its moderate exposure and reception in December of that year, the new single “ Spark the Fire ” was released. However, both singles lost on the charts [1] [2] [3] , which prompted the album to be postponed to the 2015 release. [4] After several months of lacking album updates, Gwen Stefani said in an interview for Entertainment Weekly that she had abandoned the entire album in favor of starting from the beginning, as she did not feel content and fully involved in the previous project. Gwen Stefani began writing new material in June 2015 , and a month after her divorce from Gavin Rossdale, she felt very inspired. In the same interview, Gwen Stefani said: “I needed to go through what I needed to go through in order to write the album that I needed to write. These songs are really natural - they don’t worry about what happened or what will happen, but about life at the moment, from trying to be present and trying to feel " [5] .

Music video

October 20, 2015 , on the same day the song was released, Gwen Stefani first introduced the music video shot by Sophie Muller on Facebook [6] . A minimalistic one-shot video shows Gwen Stefani on the verge of tears when he sits in a dark space with a white T-shirt [7] . Gwen Stefani noted that the video was shot in her dressing room for her performance in New York and was not intended for release as an official music video on the track [8] . Carolyn Menes of the Music Times noted that “although most of the video is done almost in tears, Stephanie sings key texts, just for an extra emotional launch.” McKenna Aiello of E! Online emphasized that “it is her ability to restrain them [tears] that really shows Stephanie’s strong sense of herself” [9] . Mark Inocensio, writing for the Seacrest website, noted that the video is “a simple but enough story to tell the recent broken heart, calling it really, really heartbreaking” [7] Erin Strecker of Billboard echoed the same thought, [10] . Erin Strecker from Billboard repeated the same idea [10] , while Joe Satran of The Huffington Post called it “sparing, vulnerable and rude: the exact opposite”. from the abundant, even maximalist videos that we used to expect from No Doubt frontman ” [11] . Idolator's Bianca Gracie called him “spicy” and “unprocessed.”

Speech

On October 17, 2015, Gwen Stefani performed the concert “Used to Love You” during a concert for MasterCard users at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York [12] . Gwen Stefani made her television debut on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on October 26, 2015. [13] Regarding the live performance of Gwen Stefani , Joe Satran of The Huffington Post found it “quite exciting” [11] while Caily Lindberg of Music Times called it "an emotional rendition". [14] , while Kaley Lindbergh of the Music Times called it “emotional performance.” [14] Robbie Dow wrote for Idolator that “when her black-clad band stood in the shadows, playing softly and singing along with vocals, Gwen was ahead and in the center of her emotional parting melody during her appearance, Ellen, looking rather painful, but sounding - period [15] “ On November 22, 2015, Gwen Stefani performed the song“ Used to Love You ”at the 2015 American Music Awards . [16] Gwen Stefani performed the song live during various public appearances, including “ The Voice ” [17] , “ The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon ” [18] and “ New Year's Eve with Carson Daly ” with Carson Daly soon after countdown to the new year [19] .
