Biography

Esterhazy, or Esterhazy-Galanta (Hungarian. Esterházy de Galántha) were Hungary's largest private landowners under the Habsburgs . Initially, the estates of Esterházy were located in Galante (now Slovakia ). The wealth of the family was due to a commitment to the reigning house and Catholicism. The family owned vast land holdings. For example, at the beginning of the 19th century, the princes of Esterházy owned 29 estates, including 60 cities and towns and 400 villages mainly in Hungary. In 1626, the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire made them counts, and since 1712 the head of the clan had the princely title. Unlike other Hungarian prince magnates (such as Battiani or Palfi ), Esterhazy was mediated , that is, they were considered equal to European monarchs.

Despite his great wealth, Pal III Antal, like his father, Nicholas II, spent most of his life in a difficult financial situation, since his expenses were higher than his income. Only his son Nicholas III was able to get rid of debt by selling the famous family collection of works of art.

Although most of the ancestors of Pal Antal served as officers of the imperial army, he served in the diplomatic field and made a political career during the Napoleonic Wars . In 1806, he was secretary of the Austrian embassy in London, and then secretary of Metternich in Paris. He took an active part in the peace negotiations of 1813-1815, as well as in the Vienna Congress ( 1815 ).

After the Congress of Vienna, he was appointed Ambassador of Austria to Great Britain . In 1830-1836, as the Consul General of Austria at the London Conference, he contributed to the creation of independent Belgium .

In 1842, he resigned and returned to Hungary, where he became a member of the Conservative Party, which supported the Habsburgs and did not want to reform the government. On April 7, 1848 , during the revolution in Hungary, Esterházy became the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the first government of Hungary, headed by Count Lajos Battiani . Served as a mediator in the negotiations between Vienna and the Hungarian government. After his intentions to reconcile both sides ended in failure, in September 1848 he resigned. Later, Esterhazy maintained contacts with Hungarian emigration politicians, in particular Lajos Kossuth .

In 1856 he was present as an official representative at the coronation of Emperor Alexander II in Moscow.
