Biography
Thorsten Römer (b. 1968, Aachen ) studied painting at the Münster Art Academy with Professor Udo Scheel and at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts with professors Riesz, Siegfried Antsinger, Helmut Federle and A.R. Penk . In 1996, he received a grant from Kunstverein Düsseldorf . Nina Römer (nee Tangyan, 1978, Moscow , the granddaughter of the Soviet writer Yuri Trifonov and great-granddaughter of the Ukrainian-Soviet artist Amshey Nuremberg ), studied painting at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts with professors Helmut Federle and A.R. Penk . Nina and Torsten Römer met while studying at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts and together they graduated with a diploma of the highest qualification of masters of painting from A.R. Penk . In 1998, they began working as the art duo Roemer + Roemer, and in 2000 moved to Berlin. In 2011, they were awarded the Lucas Cranach Prize of the city of Kronach . [2]
Creativity
The work of Römer + Römer includes painting , photography , digital art , graphics and performance . In addition, they organize and oversee exhibitions. Work with digital images determines their characteristic style and pictorial technique. The transformation of your own photos into large-format panels is carried out in several stages. Motives are divided into color zones and thousands of tinted dots (pixels), which at a certain distance add up to an artistic image. When approaching the canvas, objects are lost in an abstract color game, and a realistic image turns into an illusion. Unlike pointillism of impressionism , based on the theory of color perception, tinted pixels reproduce the digital representation of images in the era of selfie .
1998-2006 Römer + Römer supervise the project M ° A ° I ° S, organizing a series of exhibitions, mainly in the bunkers of the Second World War , which largely determines their historical and political orientation. For example, the Berlin exhibition Free Will (2005) opens with an opening speech by Mikhail Gorbachev on the 20th anniversary of glasnost and . Exhibition AT THE RESORT! - Russian Art today (2004) in the State Kunsthalle of Baden-Baden draws a parallel with Russian visitors from the time of the Russian Empire . [3] Moreover, the emphasis is not on history, but on its artistic interpretation of aesthetic means. Watching the multi-cultural renewal of Berlin life with optimism, the art duo reflected the attitude of the younger generation. The Cafe — Bistro — Capital scenic cycles are dedicated to this. You will not come here barefoot [4] and The meaning of life. Impressed by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , Roemer + Roemer created the Endless Justice series with the NATO logo, Arabic quotes from the Koran , the Bundeswehr emblem and their self-portraits, experimenting with media painting, computer graphics, screen printing and etching. Subsequently, in Berlin, Bochum, Düsseldorf, Turin, Miami and Vladivostok, they carry out performance in burqas , also dedicated to the theme of terrorism. In 2003/2004 Römer + Römer become famous thanks to the German-Russian performance Kiss. The plot of love is presented in their other projects, for example, in the interactive cube Blind Date, Adam & Eve Lottery.
2008 duo travels a lot around the world, collecting material for the artistic embodiment of the idea of a globalized world. Large series of paintings are dedicated to China ( Cosplay in Beijing, 2009), Japan ( Fuji : 50 views from the train, 2009), South Korea (Tide, 2010), France (Paris suburb, 2010), Israel (2011), England ( Gay Parade in Brighton E , 2011), Brazil ( Sambodrome , 2013).
2013–2016 a cycle is being created about the annual FUSION music festival taking place on the territory of the former Soviet military airport in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The cycle reflects collectivism in a community divorced from the benefits of civilization, which the organizers of the Kulturkosmos eV Union themselves call communist holidays. In 2017, an art duo goes to the desert of Nevada , USA for the Burning Man festival. The impressions are creating a monumental cycle with fiery, light and futuristic installations and cars, fires and parties in the ephemeral city of Black Rock City.
