Biography
Oleg Vyacheslavovich Zalensky was born on September 4, 1915 in Moscow, in the family of Vyacheslav Rafailovich Zalensky , he spent his childhood first in Saratov , then in the Crimea , where the family moved after the death of his father[3] [4] [5] .
In 1931, O. V. Zalensky entered the biological faculty of Leningrad State University (LSU) :
“Life was very hard and hungry. At the beginning of the 1st year, Oleg had nowhere to spend the night, he slept in fragments on benches in public gardens. Later, he became friends with Lev Gumilyov , lived for several months with his mother Anna Akhmatova and spent the night on a chest in her apartment in a house on Fontanka. ”
- Z. P. Tikhovskaya [4]
During his studies in 1934, he worked as a laboratory assistant in the laboratory of experimental botany of the Botanical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences [4] .
After graduating from university, from 1936 to 1938, Zalensky worked at the experimental sand-desert stations (founded by N. I. Vavilov) of the All-Union Research Institute of Plant Industry (VNIIR) , first in Kara-Kala , then in Chelkar [4] [5 ] .
Since 1939, O.V. Zalensky becomes an employee of the Pamir Biological Station of the Tajik Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Eastern Pamirs , and in 1942-1951 - its director (the location of the biostation - Chechekty - 3860 m height above sea level near Murgab ) [4] [ 6] :
"ABOUT. V. Zalensky was a very prominent scientist, although he did not have any official titles. Almost all his life he was a candidate of biological sciences and defended his doctoral dissertation only just before his death (1982) [r. 1] , on the eve of the 70th anniversary, and then after the insistent demands of employees. Nevertheless, he left a noticeable mark on science. Near him all the time were pushed around by many of our scientists, and even the academicians whom he charged with his ideas. In many ways, his character traits - a lively mind, creative talent, a rare combination of broad erudition and depth, great interest in all manifestations of life, wit <...> He only realized his creative potential to a small extent. ”
- Yu. L. Tselnicker [6]
By the time they arrived at the Pamir, Zaleński already cultivated varieties of fodder plants in the fields of the Pamir Biological Station, which became the objects of study for photosynthesis and carbohydrate content. The results of these studies were included in the Ph.D. thesis of O. V. Zalensky, which he defended in Tashkent in 1944, and in a later article (1955) [5] .
In 1952, O. V. Zalensky became an employee, head of the laboratory of ecology and physiology of photosynthesis at the Botanical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences , but continued to come to the Pamirs in 1954 , 1955 and 1957, and supervised the work of physiologists [5] [6] .
In 1988, Oleg Vyacheslavovich Zalensky for outstanding work in the field of plant physiology "Photosynthetic metabolism and energy of chlorella" was awarded the scientific award of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR posthumously named after KA Timiryazev [3] .

The head of the laboratory, Professor Oleg Vyacheslavovich Zalensky, began such studies in the pre-war years. In 1940, with the help of a group of Odessa climbers A.V. Bleschunov, he raised scientific instruments to the mountains of the Eastern Pamirs. Here, to a height of 6,000 meters, barley and wheat seedlings were delivered. Studying how photosynthesis goes in the mountains, the scientist discovered an important pattern: the intensity of this process increased with increasing altitude above sea level. Already these studies were not done for the sake of "pure" science. In those years, the scientists were given the task: to help master the high mountain valleys of the Pamirs for auxiliary farming. Later, after moving from the Pamir Biological Station to Leningrad, Zalensky became the organizer and leader of numerous expeditions. They studied photosynthesis on Taimyr and Wrangel Island, in Siberia and Central Asia, in the desert steppes of faraway Mongolia.
