Henry II de Vaudemont

Henry II ( Henri II de Vaudémont ) (b. Approx. 1255, d. 1299) - Count of Vaudemont from 1279 and Ariano from 1282.

The son of Henry I de Vaudemont and Margarita de la Roche-sur-Onion.

In 1277, he assisted the Duke of Lorraine Ferry III in the war with Bishop Metz.

In 1279, his elder brother Renault died childless, and Henry II became Earl of Vaudemont. In 1282, after the Sicilian Vespers, Charles I of Anjou, in exchange for a promise of support, gave him the county of Ariano, which used to belong to Henry I de Vaudemont (granted in 1271 for helping to conquer Sicily).

Wife (c. 1280) - Gelicent de Vergie, daughter of Jean I de Vergie and Margarita de Noyer. Children:

  • Henry III (d. 1336), Count of Vaudemont
  • Jeanne (d. 1347), abbess in Remirmont from 1324
  • Isabella, a nun in Soissons.

Henry II died in a naval battle off the coast of Sicily in 1299. His widow in 1302 married Gaucher V de Chatillon , Count de Porcien.

The county of Ariano was confiscated by the Neapolitan king and transferred to Ermengaud de Sabran (1260-1310), whose son Elzéar de Sabran (1285-1323) became the saint of the Catholic Church and patron of the city of Ariano .
