History
The Four Lions fountain was erected in 1799 by the Italian architect Giuseppe Aprili in honor of the completion of works on the construction of a water conduit in the city [1] .
The fountain was repeatedly reconstructed (in 1858 , 1925 and 2007 ), as indicated by stone tablets above its bowl. In 1903, the fountain was moved to the very center of the city, where it is located to this day [1] . The most recent restoration of 2007 was carried out at the personal expense of Professor and carried out by the Provincial Monument Protection Bureau [2] .
Description
The fountain is a sculptural composition made of red marble: on a three-stage pedestal there is a bowl, in the center of which is a column of square section, on its four sides are voluminous cast-iron images of four lions, copper pipes protrude from the mouths from which water beats [1] .
There is a legend according to which everyone who drinks water from the fountain will definitely return to Sremski Karlovtsi and get married here [3] .
