Gegenes is a genus of day butterflies from the family of thick-headed (Hesperiidae).

Description
Small butterflies. The main background of the wings is dark brown, sometimes almost black with a smoky hue. Females of a number of species differ from males in the presence of whitish spots on the front wings [1] .
Range
North Africa , the Mediterranean , the Arabian Peninsula , Iraq , Turkey , Transcaucasia , Dagestan [2] , Central Asia , Azerbaijan , Armenia , Afghanistan , Punjab , Kashmir , India [3] [4] .
Biology
Butterflies inhabit meadows with grass. Two or three generations develop in a year. Butterflies fly fast and low. Males often sit on stones lit by the sun and protect their territory from other males. Females are inconspicuous and in the morning hours usually sit in tall grass [5] .
