Chlorine nitrate is also formed in the stratosphere during the reaction of the ClO radical with nitrogen dioxide [2] :
Application
It can be used as a source of nitrate ions, which, unlike N 2 O 4 and N 2 O 5 , does not complicate the reaction with NO + and NO 2 + cations [3] :
