Getting

The interaction of chlorine oxide (I) and nitric anhydride :

Cl2O+N2Ofive→0oC2ClNO3{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {Cl_ {2} O + N_ {2} O_ {5} \ {\ xrightarrow {0 ^ {o} C}} \ 2ClNO_ {3}}}}

At a lower temperature, the substance can be obtained from chlorine (I) fluoride and anhydrous nitric acid :

ClF+HNO3→-78oCClNO3+HF{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {ClF + HNO_ {3} \ {\ xrightarrow {-78 ^ {o} C}} \ ClNO_ {3} + HF}}}

Chlorine nitrate is also formed in the stratosphere during the reaction of the ClO radical with nitrogen dioxide [2] :

ClO+NO2→ClNO3{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {ClO + NO_ {2} \ rightarrow ClNO_ {3}}}}

Application

It can be used as a source of nitrate ions, which, unlike N 2 O 4 and N 2 O 5 , does not complicate the reaction with NO + and NO 2 + cations [3] :

TiClfour+fourClNO3→Ti(NO3)four+fourCl2{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {TiCl_ {4} + 4ClNO_ {3} \ rightarrow Ti (NO_ {3}) _ {4} + 4Cl_ {2}}}}
