Geography
The district (region) of Bolama is located in the far west of Guinea-Bissau, in its southern province. This is primarily the Bijagos archipelago located off the African coast, as well as the small island group João Vieira located southeast of it. The region also includes a small peninsula on the coast of the mainland. The administrative center of the region is the town of Bolama, which lies on the island of Bijagos archipelago closest to the mainland. The island groups of the region include 88 islands, of which 19 are inhabited. The most populated are the islands of Bolama, Caravel and Boubake. The inhabitants of the islands belong to the Bidi people who speak the Bijago language of the "Atlantic language family.
Bolama County is divided into four sectors: Bolama , Boubake , Caravel and Uno . The Uno sector was formed in 2004 by separating it from the Caravel sector.
