Oganov, Rafael Geghamovich

Rafael Geganovich Oganov (born December 9, 1937 , Moscow , USSR ) is a Soviet and Russian epidemiologist, specialist in the field of epidemiology of noncommunicable diseases, academician of RAMS (2000), academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2013).

Biography

Born on December 9, 1937 in Moscow.

He graduated with honors from two higher educational institutions: first, the State Institute of Physical Culture , and in 1966 - the 2nd Moscow Medical Institute named after N. I. Pirogov , faculty of "medical care".

In 1982, he was appointed director of the Institute of Preventive Cardiology of the All-Union Cardiology Scientific Center of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, on the basis of which the State Research Center for Preventive Medicine of the Ministry of Health of Russia was subsequently created, which headed until 2011, and is currently the chief researcher of the center.

In 1997 - was elected a corresponding member of RAMS .

In 2000 - was elected an academician of the RAMS .

In 2013, he became an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (as part of the accession of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences ).

Scientific activity

Specialist in the field of epidemiology of noncommunicable diseases.

As director of the State Research Center for Preventive Medicine, he worked on the formation and development of epidemiology and prevention of noncommunicable diseases.

Largely thanks to his efforts, a preventive medicine scientific school is being created in Russia, which trains specialists to conduct research in the field of epidemiology and prevention of cardiovascular and other chronic noncommunicable diseases, to study and evaluate risk factors for their development and progression, and to conduct preventive programs, as in country and the former republics of the Soviet Union.

The research carried out under his guidance provided data on the prevalence of major cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors among the Russian population. For the first time, programs have been developed to predict the risk of death from cardiovascular disease for 5-10 years in advance. Studies were actively conducted in which the prevalence of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases among schoolchildren and students was studied, programs were conducted to promote a healthy lifestyle and prevent noncommunicable diseases in childhood and adolescence.

He also led major cooperative programs in Russia not only for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, but also for the integrated prevention of noncommunicable diseases.

Author and co-author of more than 450 scientific papers, author and co-author of 16 books and monographs, 8 patents.

Under his leadership, 16 doctoral and 30 master's theses were defended.

Scientific and organizational activities

  • Secretary General of the IX World Congress of Cardiology (Moscow, 1982);
  • Vice President of the 1st International Conference on Preventive Cardiology (Moscow, 1985);
  • coordinator of the Russia-USA intergovernmental cooperation program in the field of epidemiology and prevention of cardiopulmonary diseases (1988-1998).
  • Editor-in-chief of the journals Cardiovascular Therapy and Prevention and Rational Pharmacotherapy in Cardiology;
  • Editor-in-chief of the journal “Preventive Medicine” (Disease Prevention and Health Promotion) (2001—2011);
  • member of the editorial board of the journal "Cardiology";
  • President of the All-Russian Scientific Society of Cardiology (1999-2011).
