The first season of the show consisted of 10 episodes expanding over four hours of content from the British version of the first season. It began to air on January 22, 2016 in the United States, Great Britain and Germany, with an early release of the show available in December 2015.
The plot is about the reunion of four forty-year-old buddies who go to Belize to visit their old school friend. But events take an unexpected turn ...
The cast is a unique mix of movie actors with mostly episodic television credits to their name, including Billy Zane as a man rich in connections with the underworld who invites his friends to rest in Belize, Michael Imperioli as an irresponsible but kind-hearted former a traveling musician, Romani Malko, as a family man, and Ben Chaplin (who starred in the role of Zane in the British version of the show) as an embittered teacher. Female cast members, including Allison Tolman and Maria Botto (reprising her role from the British series), provide a contrast to male roles.
Showrunner Cris Cole adapted the show from his own drama in the UK. It was originally in development on the FX network. Cole noted that since the American version is 10 hours compared to four hours of the first season of the British version, the last six hours of the American version are “virgin territory” and have no comparison with the original.
Broadcast rights were sold to Sony Pictures Television in more than 140 countries prior to the start of the Amazon broadcast.
At the end of February 2016, Amazon announced that it had decided not to update the series. Although it was originally supposed that the series would be limited to a 10-episode series, Amazon and the show's management thought about a possible second season.
During the filming of the scenes of the pilot episode in Puerto Rico, actor Steve Zahn fell ill with dengue.
