The high-pied pontinus [1] ( lat. Pontinus rathbuni ) is a species of ray-finned fish from the scorpion family. Distributed in the western part of the Atlantic Ocean .

Content

Description

The body is elongated, slightly compressed laterally, covered with ctenoid scales . The upper profile of the body is convex, and the lower is straight. The head is large, with numerous strong ridges and short spikes. The snout is short; its length is equal to the diameter of the eye. The infraorbital antennae bifurcate at the ends. On the cheeks there are strong ridges with three spikes. There are several strong spikes on the apron. The lateral line is complete. The dorsal fin has 12 high hard rays and 9 soft rays. The soft part of the dorsal fin is rounded. In anal fin 3 hard and 5 soft rays. The pectoral fins look like a fan, all the rays are undeveloped, the middle rays are elongated. The caudal fin is truncated [2] .

The body is painted light pink with darker pink dots and irregular stripes. The soft part of the dorsal fin, anal, pectoral and caudal fins with pink dots. Eyes are yellow with a pink border [2] .

The maximum body length is 25 cm [2] .

Biology

The high-pontus pontinus is a marine bottom fish. It lives at a depth of 73 to 384 m above soft and semi-rigid soils. It feeds on crabs, mollusks and other bottom invertebrates.

The posterior ends of the hard rays of the fins have thick poisonous glands [3] .
