Yeysk in the winter of 1920
By the end of 1919, the Volunteer Army began to experience serious difficulties. Denikin’s policy regarding the peasantry and the Cossacks pushed away the broad sections of the Kuban population from the white movement. The Russian expeditionary force of General Lokhvitsky , after being evacuated from France, located in Yeysk, refused to go to the front, and the training company recruited from the mobilized Nychans completely died due to non-combat reasons. As a result, cases of desertion became more frequent. On the outskirts of the city, townspeople set up a network of shelters in which deserters hid. It is known that deserters hid even in the center of the city in large groups.
In the same year, a group of boys (33 people) in boats crossed to Mariupol , which was occupied by the Makhnovists . These people fought under the black banner of anarchy . [one]
Soon, a large number of underground rebel cells appeared. The main objective of the rebels was to overthrow the power of the White Guards in Yeysk. The cells were based on deserters, garrison soldiers, and workers. As a result, these groups united, an underground committee was created under the chairmanship of V. Norenko (pseudonym - Kukharenko). The organization included about 88 people. [2]
Rebellion
On the night of February 3-4, the following year, 1920, members of the organization seized all the important objects in the city and disarmed the White garrison. At the same time, an uprising broke out in the "outfit." [3]
The rebels formed detachments of civilians, they were distributed over 16 thousand rifles. However, management abused alcohol and lost control of the situation. Attempts were made to reorganize local governments: the city government was replaced by the communal-municipal department (N. Kipor).
Suppression of rebellion
Denikin sent units of the Markov and Drozdov divisions against the rebels. On February 7, winning a short battle on the outskirts of the city, the Markovites seized power, inflicting reprisals on the rebels. About two hundred people managed to escape to Taganrog on the ice. [one]
