Biography

In the late 1820s he worked in Kielce and, presumably, in Krakow . In 1828 in Kielce, he created the well-known engraved portrait of the rector of the Krakow Jagiellonian University Sebastian Girtler ( National Museum in Krakow ) and the drawing “Clothes of a wealthy Kelchanin” [1] .

In 1834, for portraits of participants in the Polish uprising of 1830–31 and for a caricature portrait of Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich was recruited and exiled to the Caucasus [1] .

The Vicar of the Kingdom of Poland, Ivan Paskevich-Erivansky, in his report to Nicholas I wrote:

The portrait painter, Roman Vilchinski, makes portraits of people who distinguished themselves during the Polish insurrection of 1831 ... he painted three portraits of the murdered colonel Sauvinsky (a member of the Polish uprising), painted the portrait of Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich in a caricature and an insulting inscription and because Wilchinski served as therefore, the ranks of the rebels were to be converted into Russian troops; I ordered him to be sent to serve in a separate Caucasian corps [2] .

In Tiflis, the exiled Pole served as a private at first in the 1st linear Caucasian battalion, from 1836 in the 16th linear Georgian battalion. During these years, he became close to the representatives of the foremost Georgian intelligentsia, found friendly support in the family of Adjutant General Baron Grigori Vladimirovich Rosen , a relative of the Decembrist Andrei Rosen . In essence, he became the home artist of his corps commander: he lived in the house of G.V. Rosen, gave lessons in painting and drawing to his daughters, wrote portraits of the Rosen family: Baron [3] , two older daughters of Lydia (1817–1866) and Adelaide ( 1819 / 1820-1860), former freelines, son-in-law - Colonel Alexander Leonovich Dadiani . In addition to the family, Rosen Vilchinsky wrote portraits of officers, acquaintances and even well-known Georgian figures: Tsarevna Tekle , Jason Chavchavadze , Ivan Adronnikov , IK Bagration-Mukhransky [2] .

He was close to the circles of M. Yu. Lermontov and the Decembrists . In 1835, in Pyatigorsk, he executed the portrait of Maria Ivanovna Verzilina, in whose house Mikhail Lermontov had a quarrel with Nikolai Martynov [1] .

In 1837, he was sent to Vyatka, because he wanted to propagate and distribute among the general public a portrait of Alexander Bestuzhev-Marlinsky - the Decembrist, who died in the Caucasus in 1837 in a battle with the mountaineers at Cape Adler [2] .

In Vyatka in 1837 and 1842, he painted two of his self-portraits. In July 1846 he received permission to leave home. The fate of the artist is unknown [1] .
