Xi Perseus, (ξ Perseus, Xi Persei , abbreviated Xi Per, ξ Per ), also having its own name - Menkib ( Eng. Menkib ) [11] - a star in the constellation Perseus . From parallax measurements obtained during the Hipparcos mission, it is known that the star is removed at about 1,200 St. years ( 380 pc ) from the sun . The star has a apparent magnitude of +4.04 m .

Star Name
ξ Persei ( Latinized version of the lat. Xi Persei ) is Bayer's designation .
Xi Perseus is traditionally named Menkib [11] ( Eng. Menkib, Menchib, Menkhib ). The name Al Mankib, from Mankib al Thurayya comes from the Arabic language and means “shoulder” (meaning Pleiades ), since the star is located near the cluster.
In 2016, the International Astronomical Union organized the Working Group at the IAU for Star Names (WGSN) [12] to catalog and standardize the names of their own stars . The WGSN approved the name Menkib for this star on September 12, 2016 , and is now included in the MAC List of Star Names [11] .
In Chinese astronomy, , the star refers to the constellation 卷 舌 ( Juǎn Shé ) (Juǎn Shé), which means “Male Head” , as well as to the asterism "Trench-wrapped tongue" , inside the constellation "Male Head", consisting of Xi Perseus, Nu Perseus , Epsilon Perseus , Zeta Perseus , Omicron Perseus and 40 Perseus [13] . Accordingly, Xi Perseus herself is known as 卷 舌 三 ( Juǎn Shé sān , “The Third Star of the tongue curled up by the trench” [14] .
Properties
Xi Perseus is a blue giant of spectral type O7.5III. Currently, a star radiates almost 12,700 times more energy than the sun. Its absolute magnitude is −5.50 m . If we take into account the ultraviolet radiation that comes from the star, its bolometric luminosity is 263,000 times greater than that of the Sun. In order to get the same amount of energy that we on Earth , the orbit of our planet must be 15 times greater than the distance from Pluto to the Sun [15] .
Menkib is a little unstable: it changes its brightness by about five percent, and also a powerful stellar wind flows out of it, as a result of which it loses about one millionth of its solar mass per year, which is ten million times the speed of the solar wind [15] .
A star has a mass of about 30 solar and an effective temperature of about 35,000 K, making it one of the hottest stars that can be seen with the naked eye . A star shines with a blue-white light, its apparent weakness is caused by a combination of a large distance to it and the absorption of light by interstellar dust in the Milky Way, which reduces its brightness by about half [15] .
Menkib almost certainly completed thermonuclear fusion with the participation of hydrogen, and perhaps even began to “burn” helium , losing about 10 percent of its original mass. He is only 7 million years old, and the only thing left for him is to explode like a supernova somewhere for the next million years or so. Fortunately for us, such stars are very rare, and they are not nearby [15] .
Menkib, like Naos , is also one of the few " runaway " stars. For reasons still unclear, it sweeps with great speed from its place of birth in a group known as the Perseus OB2 association (which contains the sister star Attik ) with acceleration caused by either a close encounter with another star or an explosion of the now dead and an even more massive companion. Menkib himself is also a spectrally binary star [16] and has a satellite: a much smaller star, of which nothing is known, in a 7-day orbit [15] ( 6.951 days ) [16] .
The California emission nebula (NGC 1499) glows under the influence of radiation from this star [9] .
