The History of the Campbell Clan of Kodor
In 1510, Muriel Calder, the daughter of John Calder, 7th tan of the Calder clan, married John Campbell, the third son of the 2nd Earl of Argyle. From 1524 to 1546, Sir John Campbell of Calder did not live in Kodor Castle until his death. After Murielβs death in 1573, the clanβs tan resigned in favor of his grandson John Campbell. In the 17th century, Sir John Campbell of Calder sold the land to Croy and Ferintosh to Lord Lovat. It was planned to sell the island of Islay. This island belonged to the Clan Campbell of Kodor from 1612 to 1726 after it was bought by Daniel Campbell of Shawfield. Sir John Campbell, the 8th chief of the Calder clan, married Mary, the eldest daughter of Lewis Price. Campbell of Kodor died in 1777 . He was inherited by the son of Price Campbell of Kodor (1727-1768). His son John Campbell (1753-1821) in 1796 became the 1st Baron of Kodor from Castlemartin. After his death in 1821, he was succeeded by his son John Frederick Campbell, 1st Earl of Kodor (1790-1860).
The name Kodor ( born Cawdor ) is an English version of the Scottish Gaelic name Calder ( Gaelic Calder ). At the beginning of the 19th century, Lord John Campbell of Calder lived in England and changed the name of the castle and the name of the clan.
