Tourism in New Caledonia is a sector of the economy of New Caledonia .
New Caledonia was “mostly indifferent to tourists ... while nickel mining remained the dominant area of the economy” [1] . After the Korean War and the Vietnam War , in the 1970s, world nickel prices collapsed, after which an aggressive marketing company was launched to attract tourists to New Caledonia [2] .
Tourism Development
Tourists were offered to relax in New Caledonia at low prices (according to the authors of the idea), so the number of tourists increased from 5000 to 20,000 in just 5 years [3] . Each year, 37,000 tourists bought cruises (mainly from Australia), and this led to an increase in the number of hotels in New Caledonia in the 1970s. In 1979, Club Med started its operations here [4] . In the 1980s, the tourism market reoriented to Japan, attracting tourists from there was the goal of many tourism campaigns [2] . According to statistics for 2007, about 100,000 tourists visit New Caledonia every year.
