Biography

Albertas Shimenas was born on February 17, 1950 in Papiliai , in Lithuania . In 1956, he began attending a primary school in Antalin . In 1967, Albertas graduated from Troshkunai High School. From 1967 to 1972, Shimenas studied at the Faculty of Economics at Vilnius University , after which he graduated with a degree in Mathematics and Economics. From 1984 to 1989, he lectured at Vilnius Technical University . [one]

In the late 1980s, Albertas Shimenas joined the Lithuanian Movement for Perestroika — Sayudis and in February 1990 was elected to the Supreme Council of the Lithuanian SSR , which already on March 11 of that year proclaimed the restoration of Lithuania’s independence and was later renamed the Rehabilitation Sejm. Shimenas was one of the signatories of the Act of Restoration of Independence of Lithuania. In January 1991, after the first Lithuanian government Casimir Prunskiene resigned due to price increases, Shimenas became the country's prime minister . However, the politician disappeared already on January 13, 1991, when Soviet troops were brought into Vilnius to prevent the republic from leaving the USSR . In the absence of Albertas Shimenas, the Lithuanian Seimas at the extraordinary session was forced to elect a new prime minister [2] . They became Gediminas Vagnorus . It turned out that during the events of January 13, Shimenas was hiding with his family in the city of Druskininkai [3] . On January 14, the politician reappeared in the Sejm [4] .

After the events of January 13 in Vilnius, the former Prime Minister entered the Vagnorus government. In 1991, he was appointed Minister of Economics of Lithuania [1] . Shimenas remained in this position until July 21, 1992, when the government of Vagnorus was dismissed. In 1994, the politician entered the Lithuanian Christian Democratic Party, from which he was elected to the Sejm in 1996.

In 2004, Albertas Shimenas unsuccessfully ran for the Lithuanian Seimas and the European Parliament, after which he directed his efforts towards the private sector.
