Downey, Sheridan

Sheridan Downey ( born Sheridan Downey ; March 11, 1884 - October 25, 1961) is an American lawyer and politician, member of the US Democratic Party . In the years 1939-1950 he represented the state of California in the US Senate , Richard Nixon , the future president of the USA , became his successor in this post.

Early life

Downey was born in Laramie , Wyoming . He was educated in Lamary public schools, then studied at the University of Wyoming and at the University of Michigan Law School [4] . After graduation, he returned to Lamari, and in 1908 he was elected district attorney of the Elbeni district as a member of the Republican party. In 1910 he married Helene Simons, with whom he had five children. In 1912, in the presidential election, supported Theodore Roosevelt [4] .

Political career

In 1913, Downey moved to the city of Sacramento , California [5] . In 1924, being a Republican, he supported Robert La Follett, not Republican Calvin Coolidge . In 1932, Downey became a Democrat and supported Franklin Roosevelt in the presidential election.

In 1934 he had the intention to run for governor, but after he agreed to become a candidate for vice governor in tandem with Upton Sinclair. As a result, they lost the election [6] .

In 1938 he ran for the US Senate from California, first winning the primaries against the current Democratic senator, and then winning the general election. Although he positioned himself as a liberal during the election, after the election, Downey became a conservative Democrat and enjoyed the support of the California oil business. He was re-elected in 1944 and intended to run for another term in 1950 , but was knocked out at the primaries stage due to strong competition from Helen Gagan Douglas .

He prematurely resigned on November 30, 1950, thereby giving Governor Warren the opportunity to appoint Richard Nixon, who was elected to this post.

Life After Retirement

After the resignation, he engaged in lobbying .

He died in the city of San Francisco in 1961. He left his body to San Francisco Medical University.
