Philip Sutcliffe ( born Philip Sutcliffe ; born November 10, 1959 ) is an Irish boxer , representative of the lightest and lightest weight categories. He played for the Irish boxing team in the 1970s and 1980s, twice a bronze medalist at the European Championships, a winner of the Irish national championships, a participant in two summer Olympic Games.

Biography
Philip Sutcliffe was born on November 10, 1959. He trained at the boxing club "Dream" in Dublin .
He achieved his first serious success in boxing in the 1977 season, when he won the Irish Championship in the classification of the first flyweight category. Once in the main team of the Irish national team, he visited the European Championships in Halle , from where he brought a bronze dignity award - he was stopped by the pole Henrik Srednitsky at the semifinal stage. He took part in match meetings with the teams of England, Hungary and the USA.
In 1978, he was again the best in the standings of the Irish national championship, having won in the flyweight final against Hugh Russell .
In 1979 he boxed already in the bantamweight and became the second in the championship of Ireland. He performed at the European Championship in Cologne , where he again received bronze - this time in the semifinals he lost to the Soviet boxer Nikolai Khraptsov [1] .
Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow , however, in the first match of the category up to 54 kg, he was defeated by Mexican Daniel Zaragoza and immediately dropped out of the fight for medals.
In 1984, Sutcliff went to box at the Los Angeles Olympics , but he also lost in the preliminary stage - he was defeated by Italian Maurizio Stacka .
In 1985, he again became the champion of Ireland, defeating all opponents in the classification of the lightest weight category.
He took part in the 1986 Goodwill Games in Moscow , losing in the quarterfinal to the USSR representative Alexander Artemyev [2] .
His son Philip Sutcliff Jr. also became a well-known boxer, successfully performed both at the amateur and professional levels [3] .
