History
The first mention of the castle dates back to 1256 . Halvil Castle was the home castle of the Lords of Halvil, who from the mid-12th century owned the surrounding land and part of Lake Halvil. The castle originally consisted of a residential tower with a dry moat. In 1265, the fortress was expanded. At the beginning of the 14th century, the moat was filled with water. The ancient part of the castle thus formed an island on the Aabah River. Subsequently, an additional artificial island was built on the eastern side of the castle. It was surrounded by a wall, and residential and commercial buildings were placed here. During the conquest of Argau in 1415 by the Swiss Confederation, the castle (which was known after 1369 as Ganerbenburg) was burned by the troops of Bern . Subsequently, the castle was rebuilt and expanded several times. Significant reconstruction took place in 1500 and 1579-1590, when two new towers were erected. In the XIX century, the castle was partially rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style in 1861 and 1870-1874.
Since 1994, the castle has been in the possession of the canton of Argau [5] .
