History
An ancient Roman structure was excavated on the territory of Kortenberg. During the archaeological excavations, a burial ground of the Frankish period was also discovered.
The first mention dates back to 1095, when the bishop of Cambrai recognized the existence of a religious community here, which is considered to be the foundation date of Kortenberg. In 1222 the monks moved here, founding Kortenberg Abbey, which still exists today and is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels . The gatehouse with the Gothic entrance gates, built at the beginning of the 17th century, a brewery from 1732, a traditional hall of knights and a baroque chapel are preserved.
