History
Sao Tome and Principe were part of the Portuguese Empire from the 1490s to 1975, and then became an independent state. In 2009, Portugal was the largest supplier to Sao Tome and Principe, supplying about 59% of the country's total imports. Portugal was the fourth largest importer of goods from Sao Tome and Principe, accounting for approximately 4.3% of total exports [1] .
In January 2011, Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Amado made a two-day state visit to Sao Tome and Principe. The parties signed several agreements that contributed to the expansion of bilateral trade, including the abolition of double taxation. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal called the relations between the countries remarkable [2] .
As in the case of Cape Verde , in 2009 Portugal signed an agreement with Sao Tome and Principe, linking the euro to the national currency of good . The exchange rate was set at 1 euro = 24500 good [3] .
