Kamana (river)

Camana [1] ( Spanish: Río Camaná ) - a river in Peru. The length of the river is 388 kilometers, the catchment area is 17031 km² [2] (according to other sources - 17435 km² [3] ). It flows through the territory of the Arequipa department [2] [4] .

It starts northwest of Mount Kalkaran west of Lake Lagunillas under the name Kolka [5] at an altitude of 4886 meters above sea level [6] . It flows along the ridge to the northwest, then changes the direction of the current to the southwest. Crosses the Western Cordillera of the Andes [7] . It flows into the Pacific Ocean near the city ​​of the same name [1] .

The Kamana basin borders the catchments of the Apurimak and Okonya rivers in the north, Kilka in the south, Tambo in the west. The main tributaries are Blanquillo, Negrillo, Condoroma, Mokeruyo, Moloko, Chaluanka, Ayo, Mamacocha, Kapisa (right), Antasalya, Kalyali, Aulka-Ualka and Huambo (left) [6] .

On the river are the settlements of Sibayo , Chivay , Uankarka , Kamana [5] [1] . Lands in the upper reaches of the river are an important agricultural area [6] .

Maximum runoff (63%) occurs in the months of January to March [3] . The average annual flow rate of water consumption at the Watiapa water-measuring station is 85.93 m³ / s [3] . The hydrogen index is from 4 to 9 [3] .

Climate

In the lower reaches, it flows through an arid area with an average annual rainfall of about 10 mm / year. About 700 mm / year falls in the upper reaches [2] . The average annual temperature of the river basin varies with altitude and ranges from 19 ° C near the mouth to 3 ° C at altitudes above 4000 m [2] .
