Biography

Josef Jirka was born on February 3, 1926 in Prague.

He started his hockey career in 1945, in the team “Stadium Prague”, in 1946 he moved to the glorious club “ LTC Prague ”, with which he became the champion of the Czechoslovak Hockey League 2 times in a row. In 1948 he moved to another Prague club, ATK, which also won the Czechoslovak Championship in 1950.

From 1947 to 1949, Jirka played for the Czechoslovak national hockey team . In 1949 he became the champion of the world and Europe. Total for the national team spent 7 games. In the national team and the club LTC Jirka was the second goalkeeper, changer of the legendary Bohumil Modra .

Jirka, as part of the Czechoslovak national team, was supposed to defend the champion's title at the 1950 World Championships in the UK , but after the government decided not to take part in it at the last moment (the reason for this was the refusal of a British visa to Czechoslovak radio reporters) right in the restaurant, where they gathered to discuss this event and, according to the investigation, conducted anti-government conversations and shouted anti-communist slogans [1] .

Josef Jirku, along with 10 more hockey players of the Czechoslovak national team, was arrested and sentenced to 6 years in prison [2] . In 1953, he was released and continued his hockey career. He played for the teams “ Zbroyovka Brno ” and “Kralovo Pole Brno”, finished his career in 1958.

He died on December 11, 2000, at the age of 74.
