Biography

Marcus Brann was born July 9, 1849 in the Polish city of Raviche in the family of Rabbi Solomon Brann [3] . In 1873, he successfully graduated from Breslavl (Wroclaw) University , and two years later completed his studies at the [4] [5] .

Having received the appropriate education, Brann worked as a teacher and was a rabbi in various places, until 1891, when, after the death of Heinrich Grets , he received the Department of Jewish History and Biblical Exegetics at the Breslavl Seminary [6] . Brann also edited the 5th edition of the 3rd volume, the 3rd edition of the 10th volume and the 2nd edition of the 11th volume of “History of the Jews” written by his predecessor (1905, 1897 and 1900) [4] .

Since 1890, M. Brann published a Jewish almanac, “ Jahrbuch zur Belehrung u. Unterhaltung ", and from 1892 to 1899 he edited with " Monatsschrift für Gesch. u. Wissenschaft d. Judentums "; after the death of Kaufman, he became the only editor-publisher of this Jewish scientific journal [4] [7] .

In 1900, Marcus Brann, together with F. Rosenthal, published a collection in memory of Kaufmann with the participation of prominent scientists: “ Gedenkbuch zur Erinnerung an David Kaufmann ”, where he published his work under the title “ Eine Sammlung Further Grabschriften ” [4] .

Brann was one of the most active members of the Society for the Development of the Science of Judaism ( Gesellschaft zur Forderung der Wissenschaft des Judentums [8] ) and prepared a large work on the history of Jewish communities in Germany: Germania Judaica [9] [4] .

Brann also participated in the creation of the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary , for which he wrote two large articles: “ Jews ” and “ Jewish Literature ” (with additions of D. A. Hvolson ) [4] .

Marcus Brann died on September 26, 1920 in the city of Breslau and was buried in the Old Jewish Cemetery [10] .
