Biography
His full name is Abu Abdurrahman al-Khalil ibn Ahmad ibn Amr ibn Tammam al-Farahidi az-Zadi al-Yahmadi. Born in the north-east of the Arabian Peninsula , in the territory of modern Oman . He moved to Basra , where he studied Arabic with Sakafia , as well as the methods of its study. He studied literature, Arabic folklore and versification. He began work on the creation of the first Arabic dictionary: The Books of Ain , which his students completed. He was also engaged in cryptography . By 786 created the Arab system of vowels: character . Among the students of Khalil ibn Ahmad were Sibavehihi and al-Lais ibn al-Muzaffar .
There are many legends about the scholarship of Khalil ibn Ahmad, in particular, Abu Ali al-Muhassin at-Tanuhi mentions him in his "Interesting stories" (chapter: Tales of ascetics and hermits).
