The general elections in Sierra Leone were held on February 26 and 27 (parliamentary and the 1st round of the presidential) and March 15 (2nd round of the presidential) of 1996. Elections were the first in the country since 1977, after the restoration of the multi-party political system, approved by the 1991 referendum .

As a result, in the parliamentary elections, the largest number of seats (27) were won by the Sierra Leone People's Party , which returned to politics after 29 years. The popular congress , the formerly the only authorized party, ended up in fourth place.
The presidential election was won by People’s Party candidate Ahmad Tejan Kabba .
As a result of the coup on May 25, 1997, Kabba was ousted by Johnny Paul Koroma, but was returned to power on March 10, 1997 with the help of ECOWAS Nigerian forces.
