Biography
Born on January 1, 1922 in Helsinki, his father was the famous Finnish military commander Hialmar Siilasvuo . In 1940, Ensio Siilasvuo joined the ranks of the ground forces of Finland before the start of the Soviet-Finnish War . In 1944, he was awarded the rank of captain; during the hostilities he was twice wounded. In 1945 he became chief of staff of an infantry regiment.
After the end of World War II, he continued to serve in the armed forces and participated in UN peacekeeping operations. In 1965, he commanded the Finnish peacekeeping contingent in Cyprus . After the end of the Six Day War, he held various posts in the Middle East . From 1973, after the end of the Doomsday War, until August 1975, he commanded the UN Emergency Armed Forces on the Sinai Peninsula .
In August 1975, he was appointed chief coordinator of United Nations peacekeeping missions in the Middle East , which he held until the signing of the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel in 1979. In 1980, he resigned from military service. October 6, 1998 he was awarded the title of full general. He died on January 10, 2003 in Kauniainen.
