The settlement, from which the city later grew, was founded in 1780.

The city is located in the northwestern part of the department, in the highlands of Eastern Cordillera , east of the Suarez River , at a distance of approximately 54 kilometers northwest of the city of Tunha , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 1532 meters above sea ​​level ^[1] . The municipality of San José de Paré borders in the northeast with the territory of the municipality of Santana , in the east with the municipality of Chitaraque , in the southeast with the municipality of Togui , in the south with the municipality of Monique , in the northwest and west with the territory Department of Santander . The area of ​​the municipality is 74 km² ^[2] .

According to the 2005 census, men made up 53.1% of the population of San José de Paré, women - 46.9%, respectively. Racially, whites and mestizos accounted for 99.9% of the city's population; Negroes , mulattoes and Raysals - 0.1% ^[4] . The literacy rate of the entire population was 82.8%.

41.4% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are trade enterprises, 31.1% are service enterprises, 27.1% are industrial enterprises, 0.4% are enterprises of other sectors of the economy ^[4] .

Through the city passes the national highway No. 45A ( Spanish: Ruta Nacional 45A ).
