History
In 1744, the Jesuit carried out a cartographic survey of these places on the instructions of the Spanish authorities. Continuing his work, Father gave the river flowing here into the Atlantic Ocean the name "Rio San Clemente" in honor of St. Clement I.
In the 1930s, these places began to be popular among tourists, and in 1935 the city was officially founded here.
In 1949, President Juan Domingo Peron decided to make San Clemente del Tuyu a submarine base, and so the coast of the San Clemente River was transferred to the Navy’s jurisdiction, and a wide road was laid that made it possible to deliver submarine parts to the future base. However, the project was never implemented, leaving behind only the wide streets of the city.
In connection with the development of resort towns on the eastern coast of the province of Buenos Aires, in 1978 they were separated into a separate municipality, called “La Costa” (“Coastal”).
In 1994, the city served as a platform for the shooting of the famous telenovela " " with the participation of film actor Gustavo Bermudez .
