α-methyltryptamine , alpha-methyl-tryptamine, α-MT, AMT or IT-290 is a synthetic substance of the tryptamine family. It is a tryptamine with a methyl group in the alpha position. Its relation to tryptamine is the same as that of α-methyl-phenethylamine to phenethylamine . αMT is close in structure to the neurotransmitter serotonin , which partially explains its mechanism of action.
