History

It was founded at the end of the 12th century [3] . It was originally the watchtower of the Knights of Aigl . Expanding gradually, the castle turned into a solid fortress . In 1475, during the conflict between the Swiss Union and Burgundy , the city of Aigle came under the jurisdiction of Bern . By 1483, the Berne Republic finally includes the right bank of the Rhone from Lavea to Lake Leman , making the castle the administrative center of the first French-speaking region in its composition. The castle is the headquarters of the governor, appointed from Bern . There is an improvement in both defensive capabilities and the expansion of resident premises.

In 1528, Aigle became the first city of French-speaking Switzerland to embark on the Reformation , whose ideas were brought here by the famous reformer preacher Guillaume Farel . In 1798, during the revolution, the canton of Vaud and, consequently, the city of Aigle , became independent from Bern .

In 1804, the castle passed into the municipal jurisdiction of the city of Aigle [4] . During the XVIII - XIX centuries, it housed a court and a prison, as well as a shelter for disadvantaged citizens. Until now, in the casters of Egl, you can see the inscriptions left by the prisoners. With the beginning of the XX century, the historical value of the old castle is becoming more apparent. The implementation of several restoration projects significantly improved his condition. In 1975, the castle opened a wine museum, as well as four banquet rooms.

The wine museum [5] (Musée de la Vigne du Vin) on the lower floors houses massive wooden presses and a wine cellar along the walls, which are lined with rows of oak barrels of different sizes. In the upper rooms there are other exhibitions devoted to the history of winemaking, such as old bottles and objects of the history of wine measures. Six interactive laboratories are designed to show visitors the production aspects of turning grapes into wine. In addition, the museum has a tasting room, and a room dedicated to the gods of winemaking. Opposite the castle in the so-called Dîme House, there is a museum of wine labels (Musée de l'Etiquette). Labels are grouped by topic and cover an almost two-hundred-year period. Since 2009, exhibitions of works by artists have been held here. The castle and museum are included in the list of national historical heritage of Switzerland [6] .
