American Civil Liberties Union

The American Civil Liberties Union ( ACLU ) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization in the United States that has proclaimed its goal to "protect and protect the private rights and freedoms guaranteed to everyone in this country by the constitution and laws of the United States" [1] . The organization’s activities are mainly aimed at participating in lawsuits , lawmaking and educational programs.

The American Civil Liberties Union was founded in 1920 by Crystal Eastman and Roger Baldwin. In 1932-1954, it was led by Corliss Lamont . According to the official report of ACLU, at the end of 2005 the organization numbered more than 500 thousand members. [2]

The organization provides legal assistance in litigation, the outcome of which, according to the ACLU, could lead to an infringement of civil rights and freedoms. The ACLU may represent parties to the litigation directly or provide advisory assistance. A number of court cases in which the ACLU was involved led to changes in US constitutional law [3] .
