Biography

Austrigusa is known from several early medieval historical sources : The Stories of the Francs by Gregory of Tours , the treatise The Origin of the Lombards and the History of the Lombards by Paul Deacon [1] [2] [3] [4] .

According to these sources, Austrigusa was the daughter of the king of the hepatids [2] . Her father’s name is not mentioned in medieval texts, but most likely it was King Gelemund [5] [6] [7] . In this case, the brother of Austrigus was Ostrigot [8] .

In 512, Austriguz became the second wife of the Wango king of the Lombards . It is not known exactly under what circumstances Wahoe entered into a second marriage. Most likely, he married Austriguz after the sudden death of his first wife, Ranikunda , daughter of the Thuringian king Bizin and the langobard Menia . However, it is possible that for the sake of the political benefits promised by the new marriage, the king of the Lombards could expel his first wife. It is also suggested that following the pagan traditions still strong among the Lombards, Vakho could have several wives at the same time [2] [3] [4] [9] [10] [11] . It is assumed that entering into a new dynastic marriage with the daughter of such an influential person as the ruler of the at that time, intended to exclude the intervention of the Ostrogoth king Theodorich the Great in the feud between him and the candidate for the Lombard throne, Hildigis , and also strengthen his position among other rulers of Pannonia [12] .

Two daughters were born in a marriage between Vakho and Austriguz: Vizigard (died after 540), who in the 530s became the wife of King of Australia Theodebert I , and Vuldetrad (died in 570), having been married three times since 552 or 554 (first King of the Franks Theodebald , then for his brother Hlotare I , and then for the Duke of Bavaria, Garibald I ). Most likely, by marrying the representatives of the Merovingian dynasty , the Wahoe, and then Audoin , planned to strengthen allied relations with these rulers of the Frankish state [2] [3] [9] [10] [11] [12] .

The date of death of Austriguza is unknown. However, it is assumed that she could have died before the death of Vakho, who died in 540, since shortly before his death, the ruler of the Kingdom of Langobard entered into a new marriage with Salinga , daughter of the king of the Herul of Rodulf who had already died by then [3] [9] [10 ] ] [11] [12] .
