Butte Clan Story

Origin

The Stuarts , Seneschali Dole, originally from Brittany , arrived in Scotland through England when the King of Scotland, David I, in 1124 united all of Scotland under his sovereign authority. In Scotland, the Stuarts rose to high ranks, receiving the post of Lord Steward of Scotland. Due to a marriage to Marjorie , daughter of King Robert Bruce , the Stuarts became eligible for the royal throne of Scotland when King David II Bruce , the only son of Robert Bruce , died childless.

Robert Stewart , who ruled as King Robert II (1371–1390), gave his illegitimate son, John (1360–1445 / 1449), the islands of Butte , Arran and Great Cambray . The king gave him these lands in the county and the position of sheriff . This was confirmed in the charter of the King of Scotland by Robert III in 1400 .

XV century

James Stuart was Sheriff of Butte between 1445 and 1449 . His successor was his son William, who was also the keeper of Brodick Castle on Arran Island . His son, Ninian Stewart, was approved as Sheriff of Butte and the lands of Ardmaleish (SC - Ardmaleish), Greenan (SC - Greenan), Mill Kilcatten (SC - Mill Kilcatten), and Corrigillis (SC - Corrigillis). Ninian Stewart received the rank of captain and keeper of the Rothsey Castle on Butte Island in 1498 from the King of Scotland, James IV Stuart . The clan still considers this a high honor and marks it with signs on its coat of arms.

16th Century

Ninian Stewart was married three times. In 1539, he was succeeded by his son, James Stewart, as the leader of the clan. James suffered during the war between the Earl of Arran , regent of Scotland, and the Earl of Lennox . James Stewart was inherited by his son, John, who attended the meetings of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh as Commissioner from Butte .

XVII century

In 1627, Sir James Stuart of Butte (d. 1662) became a baronet of Nova Scotia . This title was granted to him by the king of England and Scotland, Charles I Stewart . At the beginning of the Civil War, Sir James Stuart Bute commanded the garrison of the Rothsey Castle (SC - Rothesay). He kept the castle and the garrison at his own expense and bravely fought for the king. Sir James Stuart Buttes was appointed royal lieutenant in the west of Scotland. He decided to take possession of Dumbarton Castle , but two frigates , who were sent to provide assistance, fell in stormy weather, and one of them was completely destroyed. As a result, Sir James Stewart was forced to flee to Ireland. When Oliver Cromwell won, Sir James Stewart was forced to pay a substantial fine in order to redeem his possessions, which were seized.

The grandson and namesake of Sir James Stuart - James Stuart (d. 1710) in 1681 was appointed colonel of the local police. This James Stewart supported William of Orange and his wife, Queen Mary Stewart .

18th century

During the reign of Queen Anne, Queen of Great Britain , James Stewart became Privy Councilor and Commissioner for negotiating a union agreement between England and Scotland. He received the title Earl of Butte in 1703 , as well as the title of Viscount Kingart (Scott. - Kingarth), Lord Stuart, Kumr and Inhmarnock. But in 1706, Count Butte was sure that there would be no alliance with England, and ceased his support for the Union when he realized that parliament would vote in favor of the alliance. James Stewart married Agnes, the eldest daughter of Sir George Mackenzie .

During the reign of King George I of Great Britain, James Stewart, 2nd Earl of Butte (until 1696-1723), was appointed Commissioner for Trade and Police of Scotland, Lord Lieutenant of Butte, and Lord of the Royal Bedchamber. During the Jacobite revolt in 1715, he commanded the Butte and Argyll police units and did everything to keep this part of Scotland peaceful.

John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Butte (1713-1792), was a mentor to Prince George and when he became King George III, Earl Butte became Privy Councilor and First Lord of the Treasury. In 1762 - 1763, the 3rd Earl of Butte served as the 7th Prime Minister of Great Britain. He entered into a treaty with France in 1763 , which ended the Seven Years' War. His successor was his son, John Stuart, 4th Earl of Butte (1744–1814), Baron Mountstewart from 1794 . In 1796 he was granted the title of 1st Marquise of Butte. John Stewart, Lord Mountstewart (1767–1794), the eldest son and heir of the 1st Marquis of Butte (who passed away during his father’s life), married Lady Elizabeth Penelope, daughter and heiress of Patrick Macdual, 6th Earl of Dumfries (1726-1803) .
