Arnold Ludwig Mendelssohn ( German: Arnold Ludwig Mendelssohn ; December 26, 1855 , Raciborz , Prussian Silesia - February 18, 1933 , Darmstadt ) - German composer , music teacher , professor (since 1899).

According to the book Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, he was “one of the most prominent personalities of his time, as a musician and a man of great horizons, equally immersed in music, literature, theology and philosophy, as a unique thinker.”

Biography

Born into a Jewish family - his father, a railwayman Wilhelm Mendelssohn (1821-1866), was a cousin to the composer Felix Mendelssohn . Since 1877 he studied law at the University of Tübingen . However, he soon realized that his calling was music, which he began to study at the Berlin Institute for Church Music.

In 1880 he was appointed music director and organist at the University of Bonn . In 1883-1885 he worked as a music director in Bielefeld , in 1885 he moved to Cologne , where he lectured at the Academy of Music . In 1890, he was a music teacher at the gymnasium in Darmstadt , as well as an organist in several Protestant churches. Since 1912, he has been a teacher at the Conservatory of Music in Frankfurt .

Among his famous students are Paul Hindemith .

After the death of the composer, musical works by A. L. Mendelssohn due to his Jewish origin were banned in Nazi Germany .

Creativity

The author of chamber music , three operas and choral pieces of music.

With the sacred choral music of A. L. Mendelssohn, the renewal of evangelical church music began.
