Biography

Yabes was born in Loday, California. During his childhood, the family moved to Oakridge, Oregon , where he received primary and secondary education. In 1950, he abandoned Oakridge High School and joined the US Army.

In 1967, after 17 years of service in the army, Yabes served as a first-class sergeant. He was assigned to Company A, the fourth battalion, the ninth regiment, and the 25th infantry division in South Vietnam. From January 1966, the division was stationed at Cu Chi base northwest of Saigon .

Company A was given the task of guarding a platoon of army sappers who bulldozed the lane between the village and the plantation in order to deprive enemy snipers of jungle cover and deprive them of the possibility of ambushes.

On February 26, 1967, Vietcong waves attacked the positions of company A. The Vietnamese were blowing their whistles and firing deadly automatic weapons. The Viet Cong managed to penetrate the barbed wire and throw a command bunker with grenades. Yabes ran into the bunker and covered his defenders with his body, all the while getting numerous wounds from grenade fragments. Then Yabes moved to another bunker and fired a grenade launcher at the enemy, stopping his penetration through the perimeter. Yabes helped two wounded comrades and found out that the Viet Cong carried the machine gun inside the perimeter, which put the entire position in danger. Yabes attacked the enemy machine-gun crew. He managed to destroy the entire calculation, after which he fell, receiving a mortal wound. During the battle killed 24 American soldiers and 113 Viet Cong.

Army Minister Stanley Reso presented the Medal of Honor to Yabes' wife and his children at a ceremony at the Pentagon in October 1968.
