Ageltrud ( Agiltrud ; d. August 27, 923) was the Empress of the West and Queen of Italy , the husband of Guido Spoleto (ruled 891–894) and the mother of Lambert Spoleto (ruled 894–898) [1] [2] . She was the regent of her son and in every possible way set him up against sworn enemies, the Carolingians .

She was the daughter of Prince Benevento Adelhiz and Adeltrudy. She married Guido of Spoleto in the early 880s, when he was only the Duke and Margrave of Spoleto and Camerino [1] .
In 894, she accompanied her 14-year-old son Lambert to Rome, so that Pope Formos , who supported the challenger Arnulf of Carinthia , confirmed his title of emperor [3] . In 896, she and her son took refuge in Spoleto when Arnulf entered Rome and was crowned instead of Lambert. Soon Arnulf was paralyzed as a result of a stroke, and Formos died. Ageltruda intervened, and, in order to assert her authority in Rome, she did so that her new candidate, Stephen VI, was chosen as the new pope. At her and Lambert's request, Formosa’s body was removed from the grave and dressed in papal robes; the corpse was tried, sentenced, and then dismembered and thrown into the Tiber. This went down in history as the " Corpse Synod " [1] . Lambert became king of Italy Lambert II.
