Gau Düsseldorf ( German Gau Düsseldorf ) is an administrative-territorial unit of the Third Reich , which existed from 1933 to 1945 in the territory of the administrative district of Düsseldorf in the Rhine province of Prussia . Before that, from 1930 to 1933 , it was a regional branch of the NSDAP in this region.
History
The Nazi Hau system was originally created at the NSDAP party conference on May 22, 1926 in order to improve the management of the party structure in Germany . After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, the Gau came to the place of German lands [1] . The region originally belonged to Gau Ruhr, which was originally led by Joseph Goebbels . In 1928, it became part of the Gau Westphalia, and in 1930 the Gau Düsseldorf was formed on its territory [2] .
They were led by Gauleiters , whose powers had increased significantly, especially after the outbreak of World War II ; there was practically no interference from the country's leadership. In addition to power, the Gauleiter also owned the party’s, including he was engaged in propaganda and surveillance of unreliable persons, since September 1944 he organized the Volkssturm and the defense of the Gau [1] [3] .
The post of Gauleiter in Dusseldorf was held by Friedrich Karl Florian throughout the history of the Gau from 1930 to 1945 [4] [2] . Florian was sentenced to six years in prison after the war due to his position in the NSDAP , was released in 1951 . After the war, he remained a convinced Nazi and maintained contact with former party comrades [5] .
The Gau had an area of 2700 km² and a population of 2,200,000 people, which is indicated in the interim table of size and population in the Gau list [6] .
